- The Search isn't Broken -
- We're Broken
- One of the major and universal
frustrations heard from Internet and intranet users alike is that
corporate search engines are generally ineffective. But, are search
engines the real problem, or is the issue more complex? In the latest
edition of Intranet Insights, Toby Ward looks at why the problem of
inaccurate search results is so prevalent, and at what can be done about
it.
- Blue Cross Takes Steps
- To Tame An Ever-Growing Tiger
- What do you do when your
intranet content management gets out of hand? You implement a content
management system that can not only manage your existing content levels,
but one that also accommodates additional growth. Mel Duvall, Intranet
Journal's content management expert, looks into how one organization did
just that.
- Understanding Single
Sign-on
- You hear IT decision makers
yakking about single sign-on all the time. Surely no one wants to enter
password after password as they traipse through the suite of enterprise
applications they need to use to do their job.
- Using Usability to Direct KM
Systems
- Knowledge management is a
comparatively young discipline, and one that draws upon many existing
fields of study. While the value of KM is clear, how to apply it to
practical business projects is less obvious. In this article, James
Robertson looks at how usability and user centered design can benefit
the development of a KM system.
- GoLive Tips from the

introduced you to some of the new features in GoLive 6.0. While working
on that article, he had a chance to ask the Adobe GoLive developers for

SSH
QuickSec Toolkit for SAN - Bringing Security to iSCSI
Although iSCSI appears to solve many of the transport
issues facing the storage industry, there are still potholes in
the road to wide-scale adoption. One of the largest of these is
the need to provide security, without compromising performance.
Traditionally, such issues have been addressed by software or
intermediary hardware devices, but that's about to change with the
introduction of the SSH QuickSec Toolkit for SAN.
When
Is Spam Not Spam? Even as law enforcement enters
the fray over spam, the question of what defines a spammer and
what constitutes permission-based email remains a muddied and
volatile issue.

- Barriers to Acceptance of a Document
Management System
- You would think that being
part of a pilot for an organization wide, high-profile, top-down
initiative, coupled with the benefits of better management of the
company's information assets would be an easy win, right? Think again.
As P.G Daly explains, nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
GoLive 6.0: More than
Before
- Adobe GoLive 6.0 is a powerful
tool for creating and maintaining intranets, featuring new enhancements
that makes working in teams easier, and brings the tool into closer
competition with its main rivals. Chances are, though, that you're not
using it. Troy Dreier takes a look at the latest version of GoLive and
shows off some it's new features.
It's Your Content. Treat it With Respect!
- Despite concepts like the
Document Object Model, Xpath and Xquery, many firms offering software
supposedly designed to manage XML content can't seem to give up the myth
that text is difficult to work with logically, and must be shredded and
stuffed into other data structures in order to make it usable. In this
article Intranet Journal regular Barry Schaeffer looks at why text
shredding is an unnecessary and potentially costly practice.
Smart Cards From
Scratch
- Smart cards have been used in
Europe for years for identity verification. Though the U.S. has been
slow to hop on the smart card bandwagon, the 9-11 terrorist attacks have
raised new concerns regarding identity verification and identity fraud.
Smart cards provide an effective and affordable means to provide
identity verification for all applications, including those hosted on an
intranet.
The Truth is Out There : Measuring Intranet
ROI
- To begin answering the
question of intranet ROI, you need to build a business case to prove
that an intranet is a valuable and cost-effective solution for your
company. Management doesn't want to spend money on something it doesn't
have to and if they do, they'll expect big returns for their
investment.
IBM Makes Big Push Into Intranet-based
e-Workplace Market
- Research firms predict the
employee relationship management, or e-Workplace market, will grow to as
much as $53 billion by 2005. It's no wonder that IBM, which spent
millions developing and implementing its own e-Workplace applications,
has decided to capitalize on that investment. Big Blue has launched a
new practice which will leverage its e-Workplace applications and has
already signed on a big customer - The Campbell Soup Company.
